Elad Lassry Biography
Elad Lassry is a contemporary artist whose multifaceted practice encompasses photography, film, drawing, and sculpture. Born on December 26, 1977, in Tel Aviv, Israel, Lassry has established himself as a significant figure in the art world, known for his exploration of the nature of images and their role in contemporary culture.
Lassry's journey into the arts began when he moved to Los Angeles in 1998, where he immersed himself in the study of film and photography at the California Institute of the Arts, earning his BFA in 2003. He furthered his education at the University of Southern California, where he received his MFA in 2007. During his time at USC, he was mentored by notable figures such as Sharon Lockhart and Frances Stark.
The artist's work is characterized by his interest in "pictures"—generic images that he sources from vintage magazines and film archives. Lassry's approach blurs the lines between commercial and analytical aesthetics, often leading him to be described as a post-Pictures Generation artist. This movement, which emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s, was defined by artists who appropriated images from mass media to critique the seductive power of pictures and their contexts.
Lassry's photographs are meticulously composed, often featuring still life compositions, photocollages, and studio portraits of friends and celebrities. These images are carefully constrained to the dimensions of a magazine page or spread, never exceeding 35 x 28 cm, which is a deliberate choice to engage with the scale of personal and commercial imagery. Some of his black-and-white gelatin silver prints are framed in silver, adding a layer of materiality to the work.
In addition to his photographic work, Lassry is known for his films, which are typically displayed alongside his photographs in exhibitions. These 16mm film projections are looped continuously and share similar dimensions with his still images, creating a dialogue between the moving and the static. His films are silent, further emphasizing the visual experience over narrative content.
Lassry's first major monographic exhibition in the United States, "Elad Lassry: Sum of Limited Views," was held at the Contemporary Art Museum of Saint Louis and later traveled to Kunsthalle Zürich in Switzerland. His work has been included in numerous exhibitions worldwide, at prestigious institutions such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Guggenheim Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, among others.
Recognition for Lassry's work has been significant. He was the winner of the 2007 John Jones Art on Paper Award, which led to an exhibition of his works at the 2008 Zoo Art Fair. In 2010, he was nominated for the Rencontres d'Arles Discovery Award in France. The following year, he was nominated for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize, signaling his growing influence in the field of contemporary photography.
Lassry's exhibitions are not limited to traditional gallery spaces. For instance, his performance work "Untitled (Presence)" featured dancers from the American Ballet Theatre and New York City Ballet and was reviewed by The New York Times as "seductive and thought-provoking." This performance was part of an exhibition at The Kitchen in New York, curated by the director of the venue.
The artist's work is held in various public and private collections, and he has been the subject of several publications, including monographs and exhibition catalogs. His unique approach to art-making, which often involves the recontextualization of found imagery and the interplay between different media, challenges viewers to reconsider the nature of images and their consumption in the digital age.
Elad Lassry continues to live and work in Los Angeles, where he contributes to the vibrant cultural landscape with his innovative and thought-provoking art. His work remains a critical commentary on the proliferation of images in modern society and the complex relationships we have with the visuals that saturate our daily lives.
